WHO ARE WE?

The Big data and Images TreatMent Analytics and Privacy (BITMAP) group main research areas are Data Analysis, Digital Images Processing and Privacy Preserving Data Analysis, which are within the research topic Information Technology and Communication (ICT) of the Universidad del Pacifico Research Center (CIUP). These research areas are under the Peruvian National Strategic Plan for Science, Technology, and Innovation for competitiveness and human development (PNCTI 2006-2021) and the National Transversal Program for Information Technology and Communication 2016-2021 (E-ICT). More precisely, our research topics are within the area of Data Science and Human Behavior sub-area of the National Transversal Program E-TICs.

Data analysis, evaluate data using analytical and logical reasoning to examine each component of the data provided. This form of analysis is just one of the many steps that must be completed when conducting a research experiment. These steps can be summarized in inspecting, cleaning, transforming, and modeling data with the goal of discovering useful information. Data analysis is crucial to the development of theories and new ideas, by paying close attention to patterns, the stories behind outliers, relationships between and among data sets, and the external factors that may have affected the data. Data analysis allows to understand different phenomena of the real world and enables to do Data Science.

Nowadays, digital data is everywhere, and images are one of that available information. Its processing is necessary for many research areas because it has a broad range of applications such as biological imaging, medical imaging, prediction of crops, face detection, fingerprint detection, urban population, weather forecasting, traffic monitoring, fire control, etc. The digital image processing (DIP) requires an exhaustive analysis of a vast number of slides and micrographs to discover patterns or information behind measurements that must be done on the images and is now being used to solve a wide variety of problems. In recent years image is increasing and will continue growth in near future. Since it is hard to deal with a large amount of data, as the available data increases it becomes crucial to use the artificial tools to analyze the visual material. DIP is multidisciplinary science and is one of the experimental technology commonly used in BITMAP.

Offline and streaming rich or big data analysis techniques become more and more performing. Nevertheless, these techniques can be used to harm citizens’ privacy. Therefore, privacy-aware data mining aims to provide data analysis techniques that guarantee certain privacy level at the cost of some utility.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

Data Analysis on Hetergeneous Datasets



The development of the Internet has resulted in many distributed data resources which, in general, are structurally and semantically heterogeneous. This complex data is of no use until it is converted into useful information. In this context, data mining is the procedure of mining knowledge from data. The project conducted by Hugo Alatrista-Salas aims to propose new data mining approaches to extract useful information from heterogeneous database systems.

KDD on spatio-temporal data applied to smart cities, climate change and privacy



The aim of this project is to apply the PKDD (Privacy-aware KDD) process to understand human behavior in urban context. In a nutshell, the project will model phenomena like churn, administrative region detection, road extraction from CDR data, social structure resilience and privacy aware data extractions.

Can social networks replace traditional survey?



The aim of the present project is to apply Text mining techniques over geo-social networks, such as Twitter, Facebook, etc. to evaluate the pertinence of replacing traditional surveys, which is an expensive, long and time consuming process.
